The Melton Residence is probably the most unique house in Steamboat: I’ve yet to see anything like it. It was designed to resemble an old Colorado Mine, and is full of many custom designed details and concepts.
The concept for the house was initiated by the steep nature of the lot, combined with Larry’s Industrial Architectural background. It is a dynamic 2,650 sq. ft. house with an 800 sq. ft. 2 car garage. The main feature of the house is the unique great room with all of its custom metal railings and details, combined with a one of a kind metal and stone fire place wall, which requires a site visit to appreciate; it’s awesome. It has stunning 270 degree views through a combination of custom windows and 16’ bipartisan sliding doors. Through the north facing sliding door is a cantilevered covered deck with exposed curved steel I-beams forming a barrel vault roof. Through the south facing sliding door is a stamped concrete patio with the same curved I-beam roof. However, this one is supported by leaning steel columns attached at the base to the patio with custom designed steel pivots, resembling a connection from the bay bridge. This same detail supports the I-beam barrel vault roof at the entry, except in a vertical orientation connected to stone.
Another unique exposed structural steel detail is the connection between the two large adjacent I-beams that pretty much hold up the entire house. The idea came from wanting to eliminate a column. The solution requires a visual double take, questioning physics. The upper level is all master suite, open and exposed. It too is loaded with one of a kind details that keep the eyes moving; such as the cantilevered balcony supported with enormous clevis pins, or the open master bath with its all glass shower enclosure with exposed plumbing.
This house was really fun to build for truly amazing people.
