The Bender Residence is an exquisite Craftsman Style home that would make the Architect brothers Green and Green proud. It is 7,500 sq. ft. with a 1,500 sq. ft. 3 car garage and two beautiful post and beam covered patios. The upper patio off the great room, complete with built in BBQ, faces south with great views to the ski mountain and Buff Pass, while the lower patio, complete with a scarf joint barrel vault leading to a sunken hot tub which looks down to Soda Creek.
This house is with out a doubt one of the nicest, quality filled homes in Steamboat, complete with 2,500 sq. ft. matching Craftsman barn, two ponds with waterfalls and stream, and a meticulously landscaped yard, with a fire pit and park-like grass play field. The main level has a large mud room with adjoining laundry, a cozy powder room, and a secondary master suite over looking Soda Creek, complete with a steamer shower. The large great room is warm, comfortable, and filled with views out of the many custom windows. The truly gourmet kitchen with adjoining wet bar is constructed completely of antique white oak cabinetry with hand blown antique leaded glass details and 3” thick chiseled granite countertops. The foyer, which was designed as a passive cooling tower for the house, is not only loaded with unique details, but is the circulation hub for the entire house. The custom made front door is the nicest one I’ve ever seen and truly a work of art, with its antique white oak frame and divided lights that mimic the roof lines. The office, off the foyer, is filled with antique white oak cabinetry, housing a small library of books, and offers amazing views out the custom windows to the beautiful pond and waterfall in the front yard, as well as the ski mountain.
The upper level has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, and the master suite, which has a wonderful master closet filled with more antique white oak cabinetry, and my favorite bath room ever. I’ve always wanted to design a bathroom that made you feel as though you were outdoors; well this is it. It has an 8’ sq. steamer shower with a 5’ sq. window and a large Jacuzzi Tub with a 5 ft. sq. window, each separated by an enclosed water closet with a huge window, all of which overlook Soda Creek. The lower level has a large T.V. room with a huge adjoining game room, and a guest bedroom and bath. The entire interior is covered in antique white oak flooring, Venetian plaster walls, Mica light fixtures, and numerous custom details, which display pure craftsmanship; offering a feeling of warmth, comfort, and splendor.
The exterior of the house was designed to look as though it could have been the original ranch house, still standing strong 100 years later. The roofing is Core-Ten rusted corrugated metal. The barnwood siding was hand selected by Carlisle, for its integrity and rich brown earth tones. The 3 piece fascia is clear cedar, which has been sandblasted, giving it a texture and appearance only Mother Nature could. All of the river rock came from the excavation. The large boulders, forming the unique, battered veneer base, give the house a harmonious connection to the landscape and surrounding environment, while providing a feeling of significance. There are so many custom details that seem to flow continuously around the exterior of this house; from the front door, to the garage doors, to the post and beam connections at both patios. It is such a great place to just hang out and enjoy!
