ROB'S BACKGROUND
I am 45 years old, grew up in the small town of Loomis, in northern California, between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. I spent my youth backpacking and skiing with friends in the Sierras. Highland Lake was my favorite backpacking destination and I have many fond memories from there, which is why I named my company Highland Design and Construction. I received an AA in Architectural Drafting from Sierra College. I was fortunate enough to have a great professor who asked me how I expected to provide a set of drawings to build a house, if I did not know how a house was constructed. So, I made, and continue to make a great effort to better understand residential construction. I worked in a variety of construction trades, from concrete, framing, roofing, and cabinetry, through junior college. I worked full time in a cabinet shop for two years after junior college, designing small homes on the side.
I was accepted to the Architectural Program at the University of Colorado, in Boulder in 1987. I put myself through school designing and building additions and remodels in the summers. I received a BS in Architecture in 1990. I continued to design and build homes and additions in the Boulder area, until 1992 when I moved to Steamboat to go to work for Mike Roberts of Habitat. I worked for Mike under my company name for seven years, designing and building many custom homes. Mike is a quality guy who appreciates quality work and the Steamboat lifestyle. We had a lot of good times over the years and he remains a friend today.
In 2000 I left Habitat and started the Davenport Residence. It is a beautiful 5,000 sq. ft. house on a difficult lot.
From 2003 to 2005 we developed the Bender Residence, an exquisite 7,500 sq. ft. Craftsman Style home, with matching barn, and landscaping, complete with pond and waterfall.
We just completed the Melton Residence, a very unique 3,000 sq. ft. house designed to look like an old Colorado mine. It is like no other house in Steamboat and has a variety of custom details.
